Photos App vs Image Capture: Which One to Use for a Clean iPhone Import

One organizes everything into a library you can't easily leave. The other just copies files. For project work, that difference is the whole decision.

Both apps ship on every Mac, both read the same iPhone over the same cable, and they solve completely different problems. Photos app import is built for a personal library that grows forever. Image Capture is built for the opposite: copy exactly what's selected, to exactly the folder you choose, and don't touch anything else.

What Photos app import actually does

  • Imports straight into your library, with face detection, Memories and automatic iCloud sync if enabled.
  • Files stop being individually addressable — there's no "project folder" view, only albums layered on top of one shared library.
  • Getting an original file back out means exporting it again, one export dialog at a time.

What Image Capture actually does

  • Shows every photo and video on the phone as a flat list, with a destination folder you pick per import.
  • Copies the original file — same codec, same filename — with no conversion step unless you explicitly ask for one in its export settings.
  • Can delete from the phone right after copying, from the same window, without opening Settings.

Same instinct, different device: the reason to keep project files as plain folders instead of a library isn't specific to the iPhone — it's the same reason professionals import SD cards into per-client, per-date folders instead of a single shared media library. ShotGrab does that automatically for cameras on SD and CFexpress cards; Image Capture is the equivalent move for an iPhone.

The honest recommendation

If these are photos of your life, use the Photos app — that's exactly what it's for, and fighting it usually means losing the parts of it that are genuinely useful, like search and sync. If these are files for a project, a client, or an edit, Image Capture is the version of "import" that doesn't quietly make a decision about where your files live for you.
