Hedge's offload app is now called OffShoot, and it is a serious DIT tool with a DIT price. If you shoot solo or with a small crew on a Mac, ShotGrab gives you verified, sorted copies without setting up a session per card, and it is free up to 128GB every two weeks.
OffShoot is good software. These are the honest reasons people still go looking.
OffShoot is $169 per activation for Standard and $249 for Pro, or $49 for a 30-day Pro rental, and the in-app trial runs 10 days. That is easy to justify on a paid DIT day. It is harder if you offload on weekends or a few jobs a month.
On OffShoot's own feature list, cascading destinations, the Ingest Browser, S3 destinations and ASC MHL are Pro-only. Standard covers verification, several checksums, stop and resume, duplicate detection, presets and rename. If your need is one fast drive first and the backups after, that is the $249 tier.
OffShoot works from presets and a queue, which suits someone sitting at the laptop managing a set. When you are also the person shooting, you would rather plug the card in and walk away. That is the one thing ShotGrab is built around.
Same job, different centre of gravity. Ticks mean the feature exists in that app on the plan noted.

Where OffShoot wins outright: Windows, ASC MHL, S3 and cascading with an ingest browser for mixed media. If a client contract asks for MHL manifests or a delivery report, ShotGrab cannot give you one today, so stay with OffShoot for those jobs.
Pick a destination, choose a folder template (date, camera, an {INPUT} question for client or job) and, if you want, extra destinations for the cascade.
From then on each card from any reader is recognised, copied, checked with SHA-256 and ejected. Nothing to click between cards.
Nothing forces a clean break. ShotGrab only acts while a project is armed, so use it for everyday shoots and keep OffShoot for the jobs that need manifests.
Yes. Hedge renamed its offload application OffShoot, so Hedge alternatives and OffShoot alternatives are the same search. ShotGrab is an independent app and has no connection to either.
ShotGrab has a free plan with every feature unlocked, limited to 128GB of copied files every 14 days. OffShoot offers a 10-day trial before you pay.
No. ShotGrab does not create ASC MHL manifests or delivery reports. If a production requires them, use OffShoot or another DIT tool for those jobs.
Yes, on every plan. It verifies the copy on your primary destination first, ejects the card, then copies disk to disk to each secondary and checks those too.
No. Files on the card are never deleted or modified. The one exception is the optional Mark for formatting action, which you trigger yourself and which can be reversed.
Free is 128GB every 14 days with every feature unlocked. If you outgrow it: Pass €5 for 30 days, Yearly €29, or Lifetime €39 until 30 November 2026, then €69.
