More and more wedding crews shoot a slice of the day on an iPhone — rings, invitation flat-lays, a discreet second angle during vows where a full camera rig would be intrusive. It's genuinely useful footage. It's also the one file source on set that doesn't come off an SD card, which means it's the one source most likely to get forgotten, buried in the Photos library, or handed over separately from everything else.
A protocol that keeps it in step with the SD cards
- Set the camera format to Most Compatible before the day starts. Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible shoots H.264 instead of HEVC — matching codec expectations with footage coming off the main cameras, and skipping the conversion question entirely once everything lands in the same editing bin.
- Turn off iCloud Photos sync for the day, or use airplane mode between shots. A phone quietly uploading gigabytes of 4K footage over a venue's weak Wi-Fi is both a battery drain and a way for "where did that clip go" to become a real question later.
- Offload at the same checkpoints as the cards — after getting ready, after the ceremony, at the reception break. Use Image Capture, not the Photos app: it copies files as-is into a folder next to the SD card folders instead of merging them into a library that has to be exported from again later.
- Name the destination folder so an editor can tell the source at a
glance — something as simple as
